Finding Peace on the Water: A Faith Devotional for Ocean Lovers
Share
"He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, he refreshes my soul." — Psalm 23:2–3
There's a reason so many of us are drawn to the water. It's not just the beauty of it — the way light scatters across the surface at golden hour, or the rhythm of waves that seems to slow your heartbeat. Something deeper is happening. Something ancient.
We were made for this kind of stillness.
Selah: The Pause That Restores
The Hebrew word selah appears 74 times in the Psalms. Scholars believe it was a musical instruction — a pause, a breath, a moment to let what was just said sink in. It's the space between the notes where meaning lives.
The ocean offers us that same gift. When you're standing on a paddleboard at sunrise, or sitting on the shore watching the tide come in, the noise of your to-do list fades. The weight of the week lifts, even briefly. You are present. You are still.
That is selah.
God in the Deep
Scripture is full of water. The Spirit hovering over the waters at creation. Moses parting the sea. Jesus walking on the waves — and inviting Peter to do the same. The disciples fishing all night and catching nothing, until the risen Christ called from the shore and everything changed.
Water in the Bible is rarely just water. It's a place of encounter, of transformation, of trust.
When we step onto the water — whether on a paddleboard, a surfboard, or simply wading in — we step into a long story. One that's been unfolding since the beginning.
A Practice: Devotional Paddling
If you have access to a paddleboard or kayak, try this simple practice on your next session:
- Before you launch, take 60 seconds of silence. Set an intention: I'm here to receive, not just to perform.
- As you paddle, let your strokes become a rhythm of prayer. With each pull, release something you've been carrying. A worry. A resentment. A deadline.
- Find a still spot and stop paddling. Just float. Look at the sky. Notice what you notice.
- Before you return to shore, offer a simple prayer of gratitude for the water, the body that carried you, and the God who made both.
You don't have to be a theologian to meet God on the water. You just have to show up.
Rest in the Rhythms
The tides don't rush. The waves don't strive. There's a rhythm to the ocean that has nothing to do with productivity or hustle — and everything to do with faithfulness. In, out. Rise, fall. Day after day, the water keeps its covenant with the shore.
We believe that rhythm is an invitation. To slow down. To trust. To rest in something larger than ourselves.
That's the heartbeat behind everything we make at Selah Surf — from our paddleboards to our faith-inspired apparel. We want every piece to be a reminder: you are held. You can rest. The peace you're looking for is closer than you think.
